The lion, designed in the style of the ancient “sleeping lion”, was commissioned by King Ludwig I of Bavaria to honour the Bavarian soldiers who died of typhoid fever while serving in Greece in the 1830s. These soldiers came to Nafplio alongside King Otto<\/strong>, the first modern king of Greece, who himself was of Bavarian descent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The monument was created in 1836 by German sculptor Christian Siegel<\/strong>, under the orders of Ludwig I. The name “Five Brothers” comes from the five cannons that were originally stationed here, ready to protect the city from naval attacks. The bastion was part of the Acronafplia fortress<\/a> complex and played a vital role in defending the harbor. Even today, the bastion\u2019s thick stone walls and commanding view of the bay showcase its strategic importance during wars and sieges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
