The Lion of Bavaria: A Monument to Otto’s Fallen Soldiers
Located just outside the city center in a peaceful, shaded area. The Lion of Bavaria is a majestic stone monument carved into the side of a hill. The lion, designed in the style of the ancient “sleeping lion”, was commissioned by King Ludwig I of Bavaria to honour the Bavarian soldiers who died of typhoid fever while serving in Greece in the 1830s. These soldiers came to Nafplio alongside King Otto, the first modern king of Greece, who himself was of Bavarian descent.
The monument was created in 1836 by German sculptor Christian Siegel, under the orders of Ludwig I. The serene and solemn expression of the lion reflects the sorrow and respect for the fallen Bavarians, who helped stabilize the newly independent Greek state after the War of Independence.
Five Brothers Bastion (Pente Adelphia): Defending Nafplio
Perched on the edge of Nafplio’s Old Town, overlooking the sea. The Five Brothers Bastion (Pente Adelphia) is a significant part of Nafplio’s coastal defence system. Constructed during the Venetian period, this bastion is one of the city’s most impressive fortifications, standing strong for centuries.
The name “Five Brothers” comes from the five cannons that were originally stationed here, ready to protect the city from naval attacks. The bastion was part of the Acronafplia fortress complex and played a vital role in defending the harbor. Even today, the bastion’s thick stone walls and commanding view of the bay showcase its strategic importance during wars and sieges.
Although much of the original structure remains intact, it’s the panoramic views from the top that draw visitors today. From here, you can see the Bourtzi Fortress floating on its small island in the bay and watch boats coming and going from Nafplio’s harbour.
